Halloween Tears

Sometimes spirituality without science seems like an escapist avoidance, and yet, I know humans are just being indoctrinated into their social media silos without the critical thinking capacity to look beyond.

"Living in the past they tell you, gives you depression.
Living in the future they tell you, gives you depression.
All we have is now."

Tell that to someone with a pituitary tumor leaking hormones into her body causes excruciating pain.

I have a problem with Lori Gottlieb's "let's turn its back on you" response to this writer. Yes, in the end, all she can do is a be a mirror to this client, this patient - call her out on the only thing disappointing her are her own expectations.

But at what point were we supposed to live in complete detachment, devoid of all expectations? What is happening to our generation? What about the real grief and pain she is experiencing of seeing her partner more clearly than her partner can see himself? What about the onus and responsibility of the person doing the hiding? Whatever happened to be the adult who get's to know oneself and show up authentically so that your partner wouldn't be in this position in the first place? I got to admit, Lori might have a healthy approach to doing this, and yes, her job is to help people edit their narratives and their stories, but I don't want to live in a post-truth world, where all is eventually chaos so let's just disconnect from all expectations of reality to make the best possible choices at any given moment whatever is thrown our ways. At the end of the day, we do function in partnerships, friendship circles, in families, communities and even greater wholes. We are governed by laws, rules, ethical principles that go beyond one's inner consciousness of oneself. And yes, tolerable boundaries for one might not be for another, and everything anyone says is just a reflection of one's own past experiences and the "energy" and "vibrations" they are giving off at a given moment. Would you tell a young black woman she needs to just "heighten" her vibrational energy? That THAT might be why she's struggling to be hired? Yes, I agree on one hand, in Lori's dear column situation all she can do, in her role, is provide a potential mirror for this writer to take as much accountability for her own fears and her own stories as she possible can, and I agree, that in turn that will create the ultimate amount of intimacy she desires and needs in her partnership. And yet, if she does, and the relationship fails, that's not on her. That's on him. He who didn't know himself, who work a mask, who wasted her time. There are factors beyond the self, beyond the duo, that impact right and wrong.
